Summary/Abstract: The article presents a proposal for the study of spatial identity from the perspective of cultural animation on the example of the three cities in Western and Northern Territories: Gdańsk, Szczecin and Wrocław. The cultural animation activities show the intensifcation of the debate about identities, related among others to the candidacy of the cities for the European Capital of Culture 2016. Animation activities, as well as discourses related to them, indicate that the identity project based on the Western and Northern Territories has not been exhausted, although it appears in different forms. These cities “create” similar spaces in the felds of art and culture: open, inviting, for one to experience, diverse, close and familiar, not completely discovered, revealing a kind of tension between the loss and creation, eradication and inveteracy, past and future. Despite many common points, the activities are focused mainly on shaping the local identity. The Coalition of Cities (candidates for the ECC 2016) appears to be a valuable guidance. It indicates how much in common these three cities (among others) have, and draws attention to the cultural potential of the “meeting”.
