Summary/Abstract: Elbląg and its surroundings, that is region(s) of poorly developed distinctiveness, is characterized by the instability of its borders and numerous administrative reforms, which are a significant element of the complex processes of “ingrowing” and “being at home”. Besed on her own empirical studies which rely mainly on interviews with local leaders, the author presents the elements which contribute to the formation of place identity. The place turns out to be the category based on which the community is described, as well as its transformations, the degree of integration and social activity of its inhabitants. On the foundation of the place identity, a “new”, “modern” identity is built, one supposed to fill the “empty space” after 1945. The concept of place allows for avoiding the issue of naming the area in regional and local categories, resulting from, among other factors, the “artificiality” and “unnaturalness” of the region and particular subregions.
