Summary/Abstract: The article “Distance Education – Imposed Global Necessity or a Possibility for Professionalism without Borders?” is focused on a brief critical reflection on distance education development worldwide. On the basis of Nipper’s classification of the three generations distance education, each of the generations is viewed in the light of professionalism. A developing forth generation of distance education is added. Both advantages and disadvantages of distance education generations are discussed. Distance education models and practices at three universities (two American and one Bulgarian) are presented.
