Summary/Abstract: The discrepancy between the traditional learning methods and the learning preferences of the students of the current generation result in the ineffective and boring studying process. Gamification and game-based learning are popular concepts which application in education to enhance motivation, increase retention levels and deepen engagement of the students with the subject matter has an emerging and promising potential. The Web on the other hand is evolving rapidly, affecting not only the coding techniques and web development approaches, but also introducing new concepts as "grid-based", "responsive design", "mobile-first", "CSS preprocessors", "progressive enhancement", "unobtrusive JavaScript" and many more. This puts a lot of challenges in terms of how to teach effectively these techniques and constantly adapt the classes when introducing them in the curriculum. The paper presents a work-in-progress on designing and developing an educational game for teaching fundamental and modern web design and development concepts to students of the current generation Z. At first it overviews the current state and related work as well as tendencies and emerging practices on the matter, as it also focuses on the application of the different game design principles as essential part of the process. Then it outlines our approach to the development of the educational game, introducing certain game mechanics and dynamics that are applied in the educational game. Next, we introduce the prototyped and developed portions that cover different aspects of the course topics. Finally, we go over the specific usage and implementation as well as the future development and perspectives.
