FROM DIALEKTOLOGY TO SEMANTICS

Summary/Abstract: This paper aims at rendering a short (national) account of the contribution of the linguist JaniThomai in the study of Albanian Language by focusing mainly on the main fields of his scientific research and on the scientific productivity of his work. After a dialectological monograph on the his birthplace speech, Seman Fier, published in 1961 in two numbers of magazine “Buletini i Universitetit Shtetëror të Tiranës, Seria e Shkencave Shoqërore”, Jani Thomai chooses as his main field of study the phraseology of Albanian language wherein he has published until today, besides dozens of monographic studies, two other monographs entitled: Çështje të frazeologjisë së gjuhës shqipe (1981) and Çështje të identitetit të njësive frazeologjike dhe frazeografia (1995) as well as two other dictionaries: Fjalor frazeologjik i gjuhës shqipe, published in 1999 and republished in 2010 with about 10.000 phrases and Fjalor frazeologjik ballkanik (in five languges: Albanian – Bulgarian - Greek - Romanian - Serbo-Croatian) where in the linguist Thomai is a coauthor and a scientific editor. By the end of the 80’ of 20th century JaniThomai was one of the first Albanian linguists who understood that the Albanian language was still “a barren land” where there were no studies, and as a result with his will power and perseverance he concentrated his energies and in 1989 he published his synthesized monograph “Prejardhja semantike në gjuhën shqipe” through which this linguist paves the way in the study of Albanian language from the semantic aspect by placing at the same time a heavy cornerstone in the study of Albanian language in relation with semasiology.
