Summary/Abstract: Two theories coming from cognitive sciences in the 1970ths continue to influence the linguistic perspective of analysing meaning till today: the prototype theory by Eleanor Rosch and the frame theory, which was largely influenced by Marvin Minsky and Charles Fillmore. These theories were later developed to a prototype linguistics and a frame semantics. However, although they both deal with semantics from a cognitive point of view and are often mentioned together, their relation isn’t always explicitly stated. The goal of this paper is therefore to compare and combine the prototype theory by Eleanor Rosch with the frame theory/-frame semantics perspective of Marvin Minsky and Charles Fillmore. Additionally, the work of Lawrence Barsalou, which can be seen as an attempt to combine frames and prototypes in one theory, is taken into consideration.
