Summary/Abstract: The concepts of rural development were subject to quite clear evolution over the last decades. As a part of the latter, the post-war primacy of economic growth gradually gave way to the later trend of making the countryside pro-ecological. In retrospect, the new formula also became obsolete. In the 1980s, the negative aspects of both extremes were to be eliminated by the idea of sustainable development. In its flourishing period, it became a key element of policies, plans and strategies at the local, regional and national levels. In the social sciences, it was not without reason that it was raised to the rank of a new paradigm. It turned out, however, that the implementation of sustainable development encounters numerous implementation barriers which are difficult to overcome. Thus, the sustainable development of rural areas, although theoretically possible and reasonable, is still rather postulated and wishful than practical. According to the authors, a new perspective on the effective implementation of stable and sustainable rural development is given by the concept of resilience, which is quite new in the context of Polish rural areas. The concept does not occur spontaneously – its implementation forces the involvement of a system approach. The article is theoretical in nature. The authors elaborate on the aspects of rural system functioning and outline the concept of resilience in managing rural development.
