Summary/Abstract: in which suicide is committed or thought of most seriously by the character and the bodily changesthe character endures and states of mind he has once he has decided to commit it. Durrell seemsto have a knack for such disturbed characters who on way or the other, i.e. by striving for life or fordeath, succeed in leaving behind a faltering bodily status and depressing mental state. The twocharacters used as examples for this theme mirror two types of depression – masked(Pursewarden) and obvious depression (Balthazar).
