Summary/Abstract: This article is a compilation of the texts by John Paul II; the author tried to create a coherent and concise presentation about the sense and dignity of human suffering. The article presents the meaning of suffering and sickness as understood by John Paul II on the basis of his selected texts. The authored focused on the excerpts which reveal the theological value of suffering – they show those who through their suffering unify themselves with Christ in suffering, filling up in their flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ’s afflictions (see Col 1:24). We also presented the meditations of John Paul II regarding the value of the cross.
