Summary/Abstract: Saint Urszula Ledóchowska’s reflections concerning a title “Star of the Sea” seem particularly deep and original against the background of previous and contemporary interpretations. Existing bibliography points out that the title “Star of the Sea” was initially inspired by patristic meditations which were based on rather metaphorically understood Biblical texts and particular etymology of the name. With time, however, it became more and more limited to pastoral care of seafarers. Originality of saint Urszula’s interpretation of the title “Star of the Sea” is especially clear in the context of writings of the popes: John Paul II (Apostolic Letter motu proprio Stella Maris on the maritime apostolate of 31 January 1997) and Benedict XVI. The encyclical letter Spe salvi by Benedict XVI is close to Ursuline intuitions. Referring to the hymn Ave Maris Stella, the pope connects it, like the foundress of the Ursuline order, with spiritual unrest, search for the direction of human life, experience of uncertainty of choices and decisions. Saint Urszula’s Marian theology is worth further deeper studies.
