Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the problems that teachers encounter while running the first year English Practical Grammar classes, presents some arguments for and against introducing ability grouping in the course, and finally examines the opinions given in a survey by the potential subjects of tracking – the first year students of English. The results are submitted to multiple correspondence analysis in order to establish correlations between particular aspects of the respondents' attitudes. Since the problem is certainly not unique to the authors’ experience, this study will hopefully provide useful data for the debate on possible and methodologically acceptable solutions to the situation.
