Summary/Abstract: In the first part of the article, the author defines discourse community and characterizes the discourse community of teachers of Polish as a foreign language. She considers the goals and communication mechanisms within this group, the means of communication (speech genres) and the rituals of including and excluding the community members. In the second part of the article, the author expressed the opinion that a scientific periodical is a tool which unites the scientific (academic) community and stimulates its development. She illustrates the process of shaping the discourse community of teachers of Polish as a foreign language with scientific discourse in ‘Acta Universitatis Lodziensis.
