Summary/Abstract: Harmonic analysis has a significant role in the overall educational system of the science of harmony. Despite the normative knowledge in the area, students frequently get lost in the analytical approach to a piece itself. Therefore, the paper is aimed at pointing to the first and basic guidelines in the very approach to harmonic analysis. They guide the analyst how to follow the directions, understand non-defined chord structure in the form of one-part and two-part structures (latent harmonies) and, finally, through interpreting different harmonic symbols. The latter will be useful for students/pupils, since easy access to the Internet and other types of contents in this area often lead to a lack of understanding of certain harmonic codes, i.e. symbols. The paper therefore provides a detailed overview of the development of marking the chords harmonic functions, starting from Riemann until the present time, which will hopefully make the understanding of the subject matter significantly easier.
