Summary/Abstract: In 2016 Centrum Dialogu Przełomy (“Przełomy” Dialogue Centre) at plac Solidarności in Szczecin was awarded the prize for the best public space design in Europe. The architecture of this place, which until now had been used mainly for official occasions, was meant to commemorate the victims of the revolt of December 1970. However, on 3 October 2016 the Black Protest was held there and redefined the meaning of the memorial site. Choosing the square as the protest's location was incredibly effective: it offers good “technical” conditions as it is located in the city centre and is a large, open area. Its wavy surface allows the protesters to see one another. The area of December 1970 protests once again became a political space: from a square used for parades and official occasions, questioned for its concrete architecture, it has transformed into a living space of civil dissent.
