Summary/Abstract: The article outlines several general trends within modern consumer society. They can be summarized as follows: from consumption to hyperconsumption, and from products for a man to man as a product. Further, a distinction is drawn between needs and desires, which is guided by the hypothesis that, in the mind of the consumer, this distinction is systematically being blurred. With reference to the concept of a symbolic nature of contemporary consumption, it is concluded that people are constituted to consume both one another and themselves as symbols of consumption; they consume their own symbolism.
