Summary/Abstract: In this article the author presented the issue of the meaning of symbols in the literary output of J. Słowacki. By “symbol” we understand here all that links the invisible world with the visible one in man. The matter and form of symbols are diversified. In poetry words are symbols. They form their own language, distinct from colloquial language and scientific language. By means of a symbol one can stop time and even move it back, wake up a person and mobilize him to a heroic action – or put him to sleep. “A symbol gives food for thought”. Who takes it as a key, opens the door to understanding. J. Słowacki using words as symbols in his literary output, continually sought in the surrounding him reality symbols, which could show a different reality: temporarily invisible, but possible to be read. He took a pen and not a sword as his fighting weapon. His literary works, rich in symbolism, are thus timeless, having something to say today also.
