Summary/Abstract: Icon is a synthesis of theology and art. The article is to attempt the present Christian understanding of icons based on the work of Fr. Mark Ivan Rupnik. Mark Ivan Rupnik is a Slovenian Jesuit, theologian and iconographer. He creates in Rome, the heart of Western Christianity. His productions create a sacred space in the places that are important to Latin rite Christians, such as the chapel of “Redemptoris Mater” at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Basilica in Lourdes, France, the new shrine of the Holy Trinity in Fatima, Portugal, and the new Basilica-Shrine of Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. This lecture is to an attempt to present Rupnik’s creativity in the context of his particular interest in the Christian East, which in his iconography meets complementarily with the Christian culture of the West.
