Summary/Abstract: The global financial crisis that threatens the world may affect the country with projected decrease of economy by 1.6%, deeper unemployment and poverty, declining living standards, high level of social and economic insecurity. This may result in more people becoming depended on the state provided social assistance. While thе number of employed persons in the II quarter of 2009, increased for 4.8% compared to the same period of 2008, the unemployment rate remained high 31.9%. Some categories of workers are on the front line of the crisis, likely to be most affected by the economic downturn, including the young, low skilled, long-term unemployed, employees holding temporary contracts, women, ethnic minorities and the elderly. In 2008 28.7% of the population is under the poverty line, with a similar proportion of the population just above, but very close to the poverty line, and the poverty gap has deepened. Multimember households, households with no employed members, households whose members have a low level of education, households with children and Roma are at the highest risk of poverty. Neither are poverty and vulnerability distributed equally across groups.
