Summary/Abstract: For some time now, with varying degrees of intensity, there is a lively discussion in public life on the role and tasks of women in the Church. On the basis of the Letters of St. Paul, which give a picture of early Christianity, we want to look at the women that assumed responsibility for the preaching of the Word of God and the proper functioning of the early Church, exercising functions of leadership in it – and to show the nature of their work in the communities and the scope of the duties fulfilled by them. A careful analysis of the Pauline Letters shows that the terms and descriptions of the functions in the early Church exercised by woman mentioned by name by the apostle, demonstrate their responsible tasks and involvement in the work of the Christian communities. Terms such as: “deacon”, “apostle”, “collaborator“ and their “toil” (together with derivatives), which speak about concrete women, show a wide range of their activities. This is above all: preaching the Gospel and the establishing of new Christian communities, catechetical instruction, tasks serving the strengthening and building of believers and supporting the mission of proclaiming the Gospel.
