Summary/Abstract: In this article, the author examines the work of Robin Cook, a writer and doctor who has drawn attention to the creative and destructive uses of research in medicine. In choosing the popular medical thriller genre, his aim was to reach the widest possible readership, while also instilling in them anxiety, because each of us could find ourselves in a situation similar to that of the characters in his novels. The reference to the figure of Dr. Moreau emphasizes that the dilemmas associated with the uncontrolled development of experimental medicine were already evident in the late nineteenth century, during the rise of the antivivisectionist movement, which saw in this area of science a threat to the integrity of the human body. Secret experiments and reports about the latest vivisection methods have provoked numerous protests by animal rights activists, who have called this area ‘the dark side of science’. If we can experiment on animals, there is nothing to prevent similar treatments of the human body in the dark recesses of laboratories. Opposition to such methods of experimentation appears in H.G. Wells’ cult novel The Island of Dr. Moreau.
