Summary/Abstract: Reading carefully the text of the Code of Canon Law of 1983 (can. 1055 §1), we can observe two essential objectives of the marital union. These are: the good of the spouses and the good of their children. The objectives of marriage have been the subject of discussions of canonists, philosophers and jurists from the period before the publication of the Code of Canon Law until contemporary times. This article shows the evolution of the valuing of the objectives of marriage, i.e. their meaning and short characteristics of each of them. The shaping of views resulted from economic transformations as well as from the appearance of different trends including the personalistic one. At first, both in the doctrine and in the definition of marriage provided in the Code of 1917 it is impossible to see the division into primary and secondary objectives of marriage. These were made equal as far as their value is concerned in Code of 1983, where can. 1055 §1 defines marriage as a covenant, by which a man and a woman build together the community of the whole of their lives aimed toward the good of the spouses and to giving birth to and bringing up children. This covenant was raised by Christ the Lord to the rank of a sacrament between the baptized.
