Summary/Abstract: Our study aims to describe the groups in the middle of the social stratification hierarchy through a synthetizing literature analysis. The analysis briefly summarises the main concepts about the history of Hungarian middle class, examines the group-forming force of class identity, and investigates the possible approaches to the social groups located in the middle of social stratification. One of the main conclusions of this study is that the concept of middle class can be considered more as an ideal type or a prescriptive category, than an objective, descriptive concept.
