Summary/Abstract: Jacques Fesch (1930-1957), the son of a French banker, raised in a dysfunctional family, did not experience the warmth of a home and was not introduced to a Catholic religious life. He was well educated, had artistic interests, dreamed of making long journeys. He had an unstable civil marriage with Pierette Polack. He was the father of Veronica, the addressee of his prison diary, and of an illegitimate son Gerard. During a failed attack on a currency exchange office, trying to obtain money for a journey, he shot and wounded a policeman who was chasing him. Arrested, tried and sentenced to death by beheading, he spent three and a half years in prison. There he experienced a religious conversion and began an intensive spiritual life. The reading of the Bible and of different texts, mostly mystical, gave him some religious knowledge and he entered into a strong relationship with God. He received the Sacraments frequently and led a life of prayer, often asking the Virgin Mary and the saints for help. The period of the final two months of his life, waiting for the execution, as described in his diary, he lived in close union with God and in his inevitable death he identified himself with Jesus Christ in his Passion. His beatification process has been initiated.
