Summary/Abstract: The first confessions of faith can be found in the Holy Scripture where those who believed in Christ declared their conviction that He is the Son of God. The basis for confessions of faith is Christ’s commandment addressed to the disciples just before He ascended into heaven: to baptize all people in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In early Christian communities one of the stages preparing for baptism was the transmission of the creed (symbol) of faith. These words became the foundation for later Creeds of Faith. The First Council of Nicaea (325) had the greatest impact on the Symbol. The Creeds of Faith which were formulated at the Council expressed the Church’s doctrine by the authority of the ecumenical council. Upon formulating the Nicene creed, the Church demonstrated its unity, also by uniform dogmas. The next attempts at establishing a common creed of faith took place at the First Council of Constantinople and the First Council of Ephesus. The Creed of Ephesus became the heritage of the entire Church, of East and West, undivided at that time.
