Summary/Abstract: The materials obtained in 1990 on the Ratskoye settlement (the Rat river, tributary of the Sejm river), Kursk (district and region), are published. Besides the antiquities of the late first millennium and the early second millennium A.D., the Bronze Age, and the early Scythian period (6-4 centuries B.C.), the ceramic collection is distinguished which is similar to the materials of the 1st - early 2nd centuries A.D. found in Voronezh and the Upper Don river basins, as well as the materials recently found in the forest-steppe territory between the Dnieper and Don rivers. The dating findings (Fig.2, 1-3 ) are also connected with such ceramics in the materials of the Ratskoye settlement and confirm the definition given to ceramics. All mentioned sites continue the local traditions of the Scythian region. Later on the part of this tract became the substratum of the alien culture of the late Zarubintsy circle. Other sites situated near the Don provoked a confusion with the Sarmatian culture which probably reflects subordination of inhabitants to nomads and the cultural synthesis process.
