Summary/Abstract: The calendar plot of Mikhail Bulgakov’s short novel Heart of a Dog, which consists of the real calendar dates, enhances the meaning of the events in the main plot and opens them to many different interpretations. There is an obvious connection between the time frame in Heart of a Dog and that of Bulgakov’s novel The White Guard. The common time frame indicates that these novels also share themes and ideas. Moreover, Bulgakov creates his own private calendar, in opposition to the new official Soviet calendar, using it in Heart of a Dog and in his other works. The Bolshevik calendar reform of 1918 is presented in this short novel as a symbol of the chaos that the Soviet regime brought to Russia.
