Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyse the role of art in the thinking of several leading members of the Russian Avant-garde. It also considers the links between the conception of art as an instrument for the transformation of reality in intellectual trends before the Avant-garde and in the historical contexts of the period after it. The article therefore focuses chiefly on the hypertrophied role ascribed to art in the thinking of some leading members of the Russian Avant-garde, and explores the possibility of its having led to the Stalinist project.A secondary aim of the article is to provide a critique of the widespread view of the Russian Avant-garde as a purely aesthetic phenomenon that was isolated from the political events of its time, as well as its perception as a phenomenon separated from the events that preceded it and from what replaced it after its members were prevented from continuing in their work.
