Summary/Abstract: This article is based on the concept of intermedia relations between literature and music. It seeks to identify one of the basic forms of intermedia relations, the thematization of music (that is, making explicit reference to music in literature). Thematization is a type of intermedia relation, in which music or a musical composition or a composer is referred to. This means that the narrator or a fictitious character (the lyrical subject, for example) is speaking about music or thinking about it, and through these thoughts comes to know the world around him or her, or refers to some of its values or seeks the meaning of his or her existence, and so forth. In thematization, the signs of the literary medium are used in the usual way, to create references to the musical medium, for example, in the description of a composition. Music is thematized by means of the signi_eds of the literary medium, which relate to it. In this article, the author analyses the signals that anticipate the presence of musical themes and motifs in a work of literature, especially in the area of the paratext (the name of the author, the title of the work). He also analyses and interprets a variety of musical motifs, ranging from the simple to the complex and from the explicit to the metaphorical, using examples from works by authors such as Otokar Březina (1868–1929), Antonín Sova (1864–1928), Oldřích Mikulášek (1910–1985), and Josef Kainar (1917–1971). The article concludes with an overview of strategies used by the author in working with musical motifs and also basic forms of musical themes that emerge from the interpretation of works of these poets.
