Summary/Abstract: The reflection on the theory of interpretation described in this article is based on the text“The Third Meaning” by Roland Barthes. Analyzing photographs from the Eisenstein’s filmsBarthes tries to name a moment of surprise, which cannot be verbalized. It is possible tofind a similar moment of astonishment in every act of interpretation of an artwork. That isthe pre-reflective and preverbal level of interpretation, connected to the sphere of emotions, intuition and sensual perception. That is the “third sense” (significance), a special quality ofthe contact between the work and its viewer. The recipient is located between the direct(aesthetic) experience and (impossible to describe) cognition.
