Summary/Abstract: The article treats the problem about the monogamy and polygyny in the Bulgarian lands during the period of the Ottoman domination (XV — XIX c). It is established, using facts from different sources, that monogamy has been the only matrimonial pattern for lots of Moslems as well as Cristians. In fact, the so-called everyday life consists not only of rules, but of their exceptions too. There are established cases of polygynous marriages among the Cristians, as well as among the Pomacks (Bulgarian-Moslems), which is impossible in the mind of the Bulgarians. The phenomenon of prevailing monogynous marriage is stimulated by a great number of factors: economical, military, ecological etc. Probably the strongest of all is the cultural tradition which recreates the old structures (as monogamy matrimonial pattern) even when some of the conditions are changed (for example the new religion that permits polygynous marriages).
