Summary/Abstract: The paper is devoted to an interesting but also a very complex probiem of intermarriages in the zone of contact between Christianity and lslam. On the basis of diverse historical documents and on folk songs and legends as well, the author studies the prerequisites for the contract of this type of marriages. The possibility for the quick growth of human potential adherents to Moslem religion, leads to the consecutive toleration of intermarriages by the central Islamic politics (namely the marriages between Moslem men and Christian women, but not the reverse cases). The real threat a great part of women in the fertile age to be assimilated through these mixed marriages Imposes on the Christian Church to treat similar alliances as illegal ones. Especially strong is the effective barrier of Bulgarian folk culture, which activates its ethnodefensive functions. Nevertheless the intermarriages are a reality, which, according to the author, imposes a revision of the romantic thesis about their exclusively forcible character. The. examples, mentioned in the paper, demonstrate a series of cases of adoption of the alien religion both by Christians and by Moslems; and this transfers the intermarriages to normal, inderscernible from others, only by means of elimination of confessional bars.
