Summary/Abstract: NATO’s fundamental goal is to protect the freedom and security of all its members. NATO played an important role during the Cold War and in the following period in the security field. In order to achieve this goal, NATO has many security missions like: security, defense, consultation, crisis management and partnership.In the new dynamic security context, with surprising developments, NATO has a global security approach, focusing also on economic, political and social factors.Besides other many important security threats like: poverty, democracy deficit, social and economic polarization among states and regions, international organizations’ inability in offering solutions, the terrorism represents an important threat and an essential issue on NATO’s security agenda. The international terrorism is a complex threat for Euro-Atlantic Community which demands a comprehensive and multidimensional reaction.The main contribution of NATO in contraterrorism field consists in assisting the States’ efforts to identify the vulnerabilities generated by the gap between their responsibilities and capabilities. So that ISAF is the key test for NATO’s capability to cope with terrorism and international security context’s challenges.Both NATO and EU consider that a global antiterrorist strategy could represent an essential step for the war on terrorism. Accordingly to both organizations, the victory against terrorism is an ongoing effort of the entire international community.
