Summary/Abstract: Although the historical research on the founding and growth of the Wallachian monastic domains is still at the beginning, significant progress has been made recently. Historians’ curiosity about the monastic domains focused mostly on the reasons that could explain why some of the monasteries had become more powerful and significantly richer than others. In order to identify these reasons, this article takes as a case study one of the wealthiest and most influential Wallachian monasteries: the Holy Trinity Monastery (Radu Vodă) from Bucharest. The article investigates both the practice of donating, as a devotional ritual, as well as the managerial strategies employed by the abbots for maintaining and expanding the monastic complex and domain. The period under scrutiny, from 1568 to 1730, provides a valuable insight, both general and particular, into the devotional practices and the managerial strategies that helped building a thriving monastic domain.
