Summary/Abstract: The author describes the policy of the communist government in the Polish People’s Republic towards Churches and religious associations in the years 1944-1956. The government’s attitude to religious minorities was determined by its policy towards the Catholic Church, the most dominant religious group in Poland after the Second World War. There were differences in the way the state authorities treated various religious minorities, according to their size, ethnic make-up and their relatioship with their counterparts abroad. The research materials include available works on the subject, published documents and archival material, not yet published, collected in Archiwum Akt Nowych (State Archives) in Warsaw, formerly Urząd do Spraw Wyznań (Office for Religious Affairs).
