Summary/Abstract: The Policy of Counterreformation in Hungary, Austria and Tyrol. Historical survey. The fifteenth century brought a new spirituality in Europe. The Reformation represents the most expected moment for the renewal of medieval Christianity. Reformation changed the confessional world. Pluralism replaced the monolith of Catholicism with great struggles. The policy of the House of Habsburgs, according to the Holy See, was to regain the dissident world for Catholicism. The policy of the Counterreformation was to use all forms of opposition against the Protestants, which included: the Jesuits, anathema and propaganda. Counterreformation varied from state to state, yet in Germany and Austria the policy of Rome was beneficial because of Rome’s alliance with the empire. While in Hungary the nobility wanted to remain autonomous from Rome as well as from the empire.
