Summary/Abstract: The Syrian activities of the Hittites are relatively well-known from the written sources at our disposal. Notwithstanding, the Hittite rule in Syria is hardly reflected in the archaeological record. This is usually explained by the assumption that the Hittites had interest only in the effective control of the conquered territories, but not in the Hittitization of their population. This assumption, however, leaves some questions open, most notably the problem, how Syria could have become then one of the most important transmitters of the Hittite cultural heritage after the disintegration of the Empire. Based on the re-evaluation of the historical and cultural background this paper suggests that the local population itself underwent voluntary cultural acculturation to the Hittite conquerors. This suggestion is supported by the the archaeological record expanded recently not only in amount but also in spectrum as well.
