Summary/Abstract: On January 13 the University Library “St. Kliment Ohridski” gave a start to the new year 2016 with an unusual exhibition – “Between Science and Football. The football team of faculty members and staff at Sofia University (1981–2009)”. Prof. Alexandar Dimchev – leader and longtime organizer of the team was its initiator and main event organizer.Among unprecedented interest to the event, the exhibition was opened by the Director of the University Library Assoc. Prof. Anna Angelova. Assoc. Prof. Georgi Valchev – Vice-Rector of Sofia University, greeted players of different faculties and generations over the years. He expressed hope the exhibition to be the first step towards the revival of organized sports activities in Alma Mater. Prof. Boyan Biolchev and Ass. Prof. Veselin Radkov, who for nearly 30 years have been goalkeeper and captain of the football team of Sofia University, shared their memories of “the glorious time of their youth”.A recently presented photo album reflects on the events related to football as a part of Alma Mater’s history. The present text is an expanded version of this book. In it, Prof. Alexander Dimchev, its author, gives his evaluation of the 35th anniversary of the targeted sport activities of faculty and staff at Sofia University, organized jointly with the university’s Sports Department. The professor talks about the birth of the idea of organized sports in Alma Mater and the establishment of 11 male and female sport sections, stressing that the majority of today’s participants now occupy responsible positions in the country and abroad. Prof. Dimchev describes with much emotion the history of the university’s football section – being the most active one. He traced the main points of its activities, stressing that its preservation after 1989 as the only real sports organization in Sofia University was only due to the enthusiasm, unity and friendship among the University professors from different faculties, many of whom attended the anniversary event. The focus of the book “Between Science and Football” is to present the players in the football team of Sofia University, as well as to pay tribute to those of them who are no longer among us. It highlights the football games of the team at both home and abroad, aiming to return the enthusiasm to and revive the idea of organized sport activities of faculty and staff in Alma Mater. The photo album showcases present iconic photographs of the most important moments in the history of the team – the match versus the team of journalists from Sofia media, the encounters with student teams, the battle and victory over the team of Stasi in GDR, the memorable match between teachers against the female student football team organized for the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the University, the first football kits, documents and scientific research papers of major players. The glorious years of the existence of university’s “Football” section is illustrated with photographic materials, which track the symbiosis between science and football in Alma Mater. This book guards the memory of its author and his colleagues as something more than lecturers, but also as people whose lives are tightly woven between both science and sport. The included text presents the author’s experiences and thoughts in regards to: the great game of football itself; his past sports activities; childhood, adolescent and student years; his time in the National Library and the Sofia University. All of which is detailed within the context of the many fond emotions and friendships that the author found in the past years and which, despite changes in respective roles and directs in life of the various members of the “team”, continue to this day.
