The Social Adjustment Questionnaire (SAQ): Development and initial validation on a sample of Romanian adolescents

Summary/Abstract: The literature reports a variety of measurement models of adolescents’ psychological and social adjustment. These models face several conceptual and methodological limitations. A key issue continues to be the challenge of cross-cultural adaptation of various measures. Within the methodological framework of doctoral research carried out by the author of the present article, a comprehensive questionnaire was developed and validated using a sample of 304 Romanian and Moldavian adolescents. The original SAQ (Social Adjustment Questionnaire) was designed to measure three key dimensions of social adjustment in adolescence: prosocial orientation, aggressive behavior, and self-efficacy in the social domain. A preliminary pool of items was subjected to a content-based validation procedure. Five experts have decided which of the initial items were appropriate and suitable for the purposes for which they were designed. Results of the exploratory factor analysis revealed two of the three hypothesized factors. The scales corresponding to these factors showed satisfactory internal consistencies. The SAQ is a promising, age-appropriate tool for the measurement of social adjustment among adolescents.
