Summary/Abstract: The presented study comprises an attempt at describing the changes which have occurred inthe awareness of children and youth from the Polish-Czech borderland over 24 years. This is done inregard to their declarations concerning role models which they value and taking into account therespondents’ age and residence place. The survey was applied with the use of the (repeatable) panelmethod. The research was aimed at capturing the dynamics of the examined phenomenon. The current studies, as well as the ones 24 years earlier, were conducted in two environments: Polesliving and educated in Poland and children and youth of Polish nationality living in Zaolzie in theCzech Republic and educated in Czech schools with Polish as the teaching language (277 learners intotal). This enabled the verification of the hypothesis on the similarities and differences between theinvestigated groups in regard to role models which they recognize. The obtained empirical data weresubjected to statistical analysis. It turned out that what seemed to be important in the choice of role models was the respondents’ ageand – in the case of the respondents from the Czech Republic – the passing time. The young fromPoland, indicating the mother as the model, very often value honesty, justice (as well as IV class learnerswho treat the father as the model) and IV class learners – independence, resourcefulness, firmnessand determination (exactly as IV class learners who treat the father as the model). Unfortunately, moreand more frequently the young do not have role models or chose modern day heroes (music idols, actors, sportspeople), who do not always have positive influence on shaping their identity. They still need support from the nearest people, who will help them shape the skills allowing for a wise andconscious choice from the multitude of stimuli which reach them.
