Summary/Abstract: It is an interdisciplinary paper presenting the idea of a dysfunctional family - definition, functions, types and key features that characterize individual members of the family. I presented signsof dysfunctionality as well as the causes and effects of its appearance that are most commonly discussedin the literature. Contemporary social conditions with unemployment, bad financial situation, divorces or alcoholism result in weakening family ties, and in this way, in the fact that the basic psychologicalneed of individual members of a family such as the need of love, safety, closeness andrecognition are not satisfied. I presented and discussed basic categories of behavioural disorders, theircauses and signs. The adverse impact of the immediate family environment results in emerging differentforms of social maladjustment that in consequence leads to violation of principles of social coexistence.I discussed a detrimental impact of a dysfunctional family on its members and basic personalitytypes that determine human conduct and that are manifested by reduced internalization of values, standards and rules in the current social environment as well as bad perception of introverted attitudesin a family home. I also presented the principles of compensatory education as one of possible waysfor a child to its return to a social life.
