Summary/Abstract: The paper is about Jaroslav Valenta (1930–2004), a prominent Czech researcher of the most recent Polish history. The scholar, his research activity and scholarly milieu have been shown through the prism of his three-decade-long relations (since the mid-1960s) with a number of Polish historians living in Poland and in other countries. Next to research issues, concurrent political events, such as the Prague Spring and the so-called normalization, have also been addressed. The paper has drawn upon sources stored in the Science Archive of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Learning in Kraków, and above all the legacy of Henryk Batowski (1907–1999), an eminent Polish historian and Slavist.
