The reveal of cultural target antisemitism in the work of Jean Ancel

Summary/Abstract: While he dedicated his entire life to only one subject – the study of Holocaust in Romania –, Jean Ancel was undoubtedly an accomplished historian who never overlooked any of the aspects – no matter how secondary might they seem – susceptible to shed new light on his fundamental issue. This is because a historical fact is never one-dimensional and its explanation is never monistic. That is why the volumes of documents and studies Jean Ancel has edited and published contain numerous pieces of information regarding many other aspects of the Romanian-Jewish common history, including the anti-Semitism in the cultural sphere, that is “Romanianization of the souls”, “Romanianization of cultural and intellectual life”, “Romanianization of the word”, “Romanianization of the spirits” and so on. His works contain numerous documentary pieces of evidence, one more revealing than the other. Among the books Jean Ancel did not write, but which he could definitely have written, there should have been one dedicated to the Romanian cultural anti-Semitism. While he did not write it, per se, it does exist in a diffuse, yet dense manner, in most of his writings.
