Summary/Abstract: Throughout the last decades, the notions of centre and periphery have become so deeply entrenched in linguistics that are normally taken for granted. The paper traces their origins back to field theory as laid down by the prominent German linguists G. Ipsen and J. Trier and works of Prague linguistic circle. Underlying space and force-dynamics metaphors are revealed. An alternative justification of the use of these notions in linguistics came up with cognitive research into the structure of categories as perceived by humans. E. Rosch’s insights into prototypical organization of categories have been carried out to linguistics and proved valid for linguistic phenomena. Thus, the intuitively self-evident notions of centre and periphery have in fact a solid background in linguistics represented by three different scholarly traditions.
