Summary/Abstract: In this article I seek to make a case for the claim that within the philosophical thought of the 17th and 18th centuries certain forms of agnosticism emerged: ones that delineated their defining ideas through an invocation of religious faith, or through their opposition to the latter. They met, and often still do today, with a harsh judgement from both certain churches and from self-declared atheists. It is worth taking a closer look at the argumentation of the supporters of these forms of agnosticism, as it may allow us to avoid at least some of the misunderstandings that pertain to this standpoint.
