Summary/Abstract: The censuses undertaken by the Ottoman Empire in the late 19 th century have left multiple traces in the preserved documental archives. One family story helps reveal and bring back together (where they belonged) two elements of the written records in this regard: the population registers, (kept in institutional archives), and the identity cards, to be found also in private hands. The research presents a case when the data of one identity card from 1885 is to be confirmed and enriched by the entries of a locally kept population register.
