On the Constitution of Genre in the Novella "Die Liebe des Plato" by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch

Summary/Abstract: Leopold von Sacher-Masochs "Die Liebe des Plato" (1870) erzählt eine ›platonische‹ Liebe verdeckter Homosexualität, eingebettet in den Zyklus von Novellenzyklen "Das Vermächtniß Kains". Der Beitrag stellt die Frage nach der gattungstechnischen Einhegung dieses ›Problems‹: Warum wählt der Autor für diesen wenig gelesenen Text die Briefform, warum zitiert er den Briefroman und übersetzt ihn in ein Setting, in dem es um die Sammlung sozialer und naturgeschichtlicher Probleme geht? Mit Platons "Symposion" und Goethes "Werther" werden Prätexte identifiziert, die formal und inhaltlich stärker in das Gattungsspiel des Textes verstrickt sind als die Forschung bislang herausgearbeitet hat. // Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s "Die Liebe des Plato" (1870) tells a ›platonic‹ love story of concealed homosexuality. The novella is part of a cycle of novella-cycles entitled "Das Vermächtniß Kains". This paper outlines how Sacher-Masoch deals with enclosing both problems by means of genre techniques: Why did he choose the epistolary form for this now little-known text? Why does he quote the epistolary novel as a genre and transplant it into a 19th century setting which aims at collecting social questions and those of natural history? Plato’s "Symposion" and Goethe’s "Werther" can be identified as pretexts that are deeply entangled with this novella both in form and content.
