Summary/Abstract: Noise has a negative impact on the quality of life in the city. It can reduce the attractiveness of public space. Properly designed space, equipped with infrastructure, is essential for the inhabitants’ proper functioning. It minimizes exclusion, reduces social divisions, shapes attitudes, protects and nurtures local culture. The aim of the paper is to diagnose the quality of the city public space using the subjective method of assessing acoustic nuisance and to verify the hypothesis of negative impact on the functionality and attractiveness of selected public spaces. Three types of public spaces of the city of Kalisz were studied. The subjective assessment of acoustic nuisance using the interview method was performed to achieve the objective. The results of the research show that noise is not highly sensitive to the surveyed space users, mainly because of using the space for other than leisure purposes. The largest source of noise in selected locations is car transportation, which is not an obstacle to inter-human contacts, as opposed to interference generated by road or repair works.
