Summary/Abstract: Recognized as an independent state in 1962, Algeria became the subject of interest on the part of the Superpowers, pursuing the expansion of their spheres of influence, characteristic of the Cold War. Bulgaria, however, enjoyed special privileges thanks to the supply of weapons it took the risk to carry out on behalf of the Soviet bloc countries during the Algerian War. As a result of the earned, well-respected attitude, Sofia was engaged in the realization of its economic interests, and the Bulgarian activity was officially motivated by the concern for the Algerian integration into the socialist camp. Being until recently France’s colony, the young Maghreb state was sensitive to any external pressure, and Bulgaria was been forced to make political compromises so as not to harm the business ties between the two countries.
