Summary/Abstract: Degradation of urban space is a consequence of the termination of the evolutionary process of city development. This is manifested most often by the loss of attractiveness of the city centre, the presence of neglected post-industrial and old railway sites, and areas of intermingled forms of development that promote social conflicts in the spatial context, the presence of empty, condemned buildings, the lack of public space attractive for its users, etc. Degraded areas are barriers limiting development processes in the city. Urban renewal is a prerequisite for reversing negative processes occurring within the city. Renewal is accompanied by revitalisation. This is the process of restoring the attractiveness of urban space which requires a holistic approach. The paper aims to analyse the relationship between urban renewal and revitalisation and to indicate what conditions must be met in order for the management of revitalisation to be characterised by features of innovative management.
