Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to deal with the problem of defining the social and economic development of Polish regions. The analysis is based on the macroeconomic measures, which refer to social and economic aspects. The synthetic measure used in the article corresponds to period between 1999 and 2008, and delivers the answer to the question whether the differences between economic development of different regions intensified or decreased in this period. The conclusions drawn from the article might be a basis for further discussion about the regions which has been successful since the establishment of territorial self-government in Poland.
